Sad Vacation - World Exclusive interview with Co writer & Producer - Brett Dunford.

Well I am very, very pleased to be able to bring you a World Exclusive!!!!

I have been very lucky to be given an interview with Brett Dunford, Sad Vacation's co-writer and Producer.

Interview with Sad Vacation co-writer and producer, Brett Dunford

PH: Now that Sad Vacation is ready for release how do you feel about the finished product

BD: I feel fucking good about it. I was able to view the documentary at various creative stages, so I had a pretty good idea of how it would turn out. But you can never be one hundred percent sure until you've seen the end result. And it goes beyond what I expected.
PH: How and when did your involvement start?

BD: I was brought into it during the final months of production. As you know, I run a leading Sid and Nancy blog and Facebook community, and have been writing a biography on Sid called Vicious White Kid for a couple of years now. We first hooked up when I interviewed him for my blog in April 2014, which was one of his first interviews for Sad Vacation, funnily enough. Exactly two years later and he's interviewing me!
Phyllis Stein set the whole thing up, really. And the more I talked to Danny, the more I realised we were totally on the same page. Other than the anecdotes that I give in the film, I was also consultant, oversaw some of the London reenactment shoots, and helped write part of the narrative.
PH: Reenactments?
BD: I dragged Conor Hussey of The Sex Pistols Experience out in the pissing rain for a couple of days, poor lad. I was present on the first day and it was uncanny watching him walking around London and acting like Sid; he really looked the part.
PH: What are you most proud of about the film as a whole?
BD: I'm happy that we made a solid documentary that presents facts instead of the usual unprovable distractions. I think it's as close as we're ever going to get to solving the events of the Chelsea Hotel.
PH: Tell me something exclusive.
BD: Huey Morgan of the Fun Lovin' Criminals does the narration, although I think that information is up at IMDb already. Um, what else? Sad Vacation contains more unseen photographs of Sid and Nancy in one place than anything else on the market right now. It's a photo collector's wet dream, and some of them are quite "personal".
PH: When can the public see it?
BD: It opens in London through the Doc' n Roll Festival. At Picturehouse Central, Shaftesbury Avenue on November 6th.
PH: Apart from the London premiere, are there plans for a wider theatrical release?
BD: We have one other date already in Philadelphia, and screenings for Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Texas are being ironed out as we speak. Territories outside of the UK and US are also in the works.
PH: Will there be related merchandise?
BD: Yes. The DVD drops on December 9th worldwide, and there will probably be the usual related stuff like t-shirts and posters, but I have no idea of when they might be available to purchase. The safest bet would be around the time of the DVD release. You can stay up-to-date via the official Sad Vacation Facebook page, and at the Chip Baker website.
PH: Are there any extras?
BD: You'll get a behind-the-scenes featurette, some promotional material like the theatrical and teaser trailers. and a couple of music videos. Another thing I should mention is that Sad Vacation has a great soundtrack.
PH: Anything special planned for the premieres that you can divulge?

BD: Maaaybe! But if I divulged them now, they wouldn't be special.

PH: Trying to be as impartial as possible, can you sum up what the fans will get from this film?

BD: The truth. Or as fucking close to it as humanly possible at this juncture. If you have seen Danny's previous film,
Looking for Johnny, then you will know what to expect. He's a guerrilla filmmaker and gets shit done on half the budget of other documentarians. And Sad Vacation is his best film to date, in my opinion.

Sad Vacation - The Last Days of Sid & Nancy - a bit more info

Recently I had a chat to Brett Dunford, who is the spokesperson for this project.

Here's a few things he told me about the new documentary.

'' I saw the workprint last night for the first time, and can say hands down, it blows every other doc out of the water.'' quote 28th May 2016.

I asked if it was a documentary or docudrama: "Sad Vacation" is a straightforward, no bullshit documentary with re enactments, location footage and licensed media.

Who is contributing to the story: I'm co-writing the narrative with Spanish director Danny Garcia, who made the recent films "The Rise and Fall of The Clash" and "Looking for Johnny".

Expected release date: We are aiming to get theatrical premieres rolling in October, with a DVD release to follow. "Sad Vacation" will be on fans' shelves by the end of the year.

What is the expected running time: I saw a workprint of Sad Vacation on Friday that had a running time of 97 minutes. We may tighten it up a little or we may extend it a little, especially if our crowdfunding campaign is a success.

"Sad Vacation" will be out by October 2016. We've spent two years making this film, on and off, and now we have a deadline to meet.

Sid & Nancy story has been covered before, what will this offer that’s different: The truth for starters. We re-interviewed some of the key residents of the Chelsea Hotel, and we have access to newly-released legal documents. It's not a definitive verdict - that is out of our hands - but a strictly impartial analysis that will present the facts straighter and more coherently than the past.''

so there you have it - some up to date info - as much as I know right now.

I took the info below from their Indiegogo page -

''Thanks to your help in our previous campaign, we have managed to assemble a great cast for "Sad Vacation". We have conducted many interviews with those who encountered punk rock's Romeo and Juliet, including Roberta BayleySteve "Roadent" ConollyDonna DestriKenny "Stinker" GordonBob GruenJohn HolmstromFrank InfanteHellin KillerWalter LureHonest John PlainHowie PyroCynthia RossAndy Shernoff, Gaye Black, Casino Steel, Phyllis SteinSylvain Sylvain; in addition to the late Leee Black Childers.

We are especially pleased to have interviewed three key residents of the Chelsea Hotel, Victor Colicchio"Neon" Leon Matthews, and Ned Van Zandt, who had a lot to tell us about that morning. Drawing upon their reflections and a batch of newly-released Grand Jury documents, we have been able to piece together a solid timeline of events for the very first time.''

This is all very exciting - keep looking in, if I get more info I will share it with you all as soon as I have it.

Sid Vicious - 25th December 1977, Ivanhoes, Huddersfield

Here's a little something extra for you.

At the Ivanhoes gig Sid, Steve & Paul played a couple of songs together for the audience while Johnny was off larking around with the kids.
I only have 1 of the songs, so here it is. This song would go on to feature a lot in Sid's short solo career.

20th September 1976, 100 Club Punk Festival, London

On this night in Sex Pistols/Punk history took place a famous event. THE 100 CLUB PUNK FESTIVAL. A 2 day event- it was a punk rock showcase. Over the last 6-8 weeks the word 'punk' had been ascribed to this new musical phenomenon.

On Monday 20th September 1976 Subway Sect, Suzie & The Banshees, The Clash & headliners the Sex Pistols played. I have 3 recordings from tonights gig (of varying quality)
Tonight I present to you those recordings.

First up is the debut performance of Suzie & The Banshees.
line up:
Siouxsie vocals
Steve Spunka (later called Severin) on Bass
Marco Pirroni on Guitar
& of course Sid Vicious on Drums

Track:
They played one long song which as most of us will know was the Lord's Prayer mixed up with a bit of Twist & Shout, Deutschland Uber Alles & Knocking On Heavens Door.

The quality of the recording is piss poor but its a real historical punk event, the first Suzie Gig, First night of the first ever punk festival & the first public performance of Sid in any shape or form.

Next up that night was the Clash. This recording is better than the Suzi one. So I thought I would include their gig as part of this historic night - I got the set list off another site.

Line up:
Joe Strummer Vocals, Guitar
Mick Jones Vocals, Guitar
Paul Simmonon Bass
Terry Chimes Drums

Tracks:
01 White Riot
02 London's Burning
03 I'm So Bored With You
04 How Can I Understand The Flies
05 Protex Blue
06 Deadly Serious
07 Deny
08 48 Hours
09 What's My Name?
