John Lydon - 26th April 2015, 100 Club Q & A - a review by Kevin Harris

Last Sunday John Lydon did his final UK Q&A for his Anger is an Energy book. Fan Kevin Harris was there & has been kind enough to write a quick review for Acid Drops. His also shared a few photos he took .

The Review:

I catch the train down too London from Wolverhampton on Sunday 26th April 2015 arrive in London Euston at about 3pm check into a Travelodge in Kings Cross.

Drop my bits n pieces off and get ready for my 1st mission off on a pilgrimage to John Lydons home where he lived as a boy/teenager with his mom and dad at number 1 Honeyfield which is a flat on the six acres estate Finsbury Park, North London ,it seems a bit of a rough old council estate that's been done up a bit since Johnny was last there.

Anyway I take a few pics and get on my way and head back too kings cross grab myself a couple of drinks and something too eat and by that time its about 6pm so I start heading over towards Oxford St, 100 Club on the tube.
I get off the tube and start walking down Oxford St. All of a sudden I see this queue about 3 deep which runs down from the 100 Club door to the crossroads with Wardour St and guess what I'm at the end of it.
I was standing there for about 10 mins then I hear this shouting I turn around and there's Johnny Lydon hanging out the back window of a people carrier car shouting ''don't fucking go in I aint there yet. I'm going to get a fuckin drink'', which I thought was great.
About 20 mins pass and the start letting people in. eventually I get inside and the stage is set with two chairs and a table with drinks on it the lights are down low and the Pistols, PIL, Iggy and the Stooges, and the New York Dolls are blasting out thru the speakers. Then walking thru the crowd to the stage comes John Lydon and his mate Johnny Rambo and a woman interviewer.
They start off talking about John's childhood, born to Irish parents and living on a rough council estate, then move onto John when he got meningitis and about when he lost his memory thru the disease.
They then move onto early Pistols stuff ie hanging out with Sid and Viv Albertine, which johnny remembers Viv being a bit of a posh bird. He then says that she wrote about him in her recent book he starts laughing that she states he wanked on her jeans and that she was a bit unimpressed onetime that she slept in bed one night with Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten and didn't get shagged.
I seem too remember Johnny stating that he thought that Johnny Thunders was the best lead guitar player he had ever seen, and that jimmy Pursey called Sham 69 Sham 69 cos jimmy didn't know how too do the 69 position and when he did try it it was a sham. He had the whole audience laughing.

Johnny is very funny tonight, he's on form with his antics and his tales about his life and he seems very relaxed and at ease and said he wished he could come off stage and have a drink with all of us.

A couple of other bits I remember  John calling Sid's mom a fucking spiteful bitch as when john and Sid used too hang around together, before the pistols, they used to go to each others houses. John said Sid was always made welcome by Mrs Lydon. John's Mom would always feed him, there was always food for both of them when they arrived, but when Johnny went too Sid's moms, he said she was so spiteful she would make him feel unwelcome and never gave him something too eat even though she cooked something for Sid and he said he hated her for giving Sid heroin.

On that note he blasts at Malcolm McClaren, saying how the hell did he think he invented ''me! Johnny Rotten and punk'' he said ''I am who I am and punk would've happened one way or another'' and stated that when they tried too ban the word bollocks he alone went to court in Nottingham to defend it. Malcolm didn't turn up or the other Pistols - anyway it didn't matter cos he won the case, as the evening comes to a finale after loads of questions answered we are told too take a raffle ticket too the table by the exit door and were all given a stamped collectors edition of Johns new autobiography. All in all everyone seemed to have had a good night.

A BIG THANKS to Kevin for sharing his words & photos with us all.

Anti Nowhere League, Converse Represents, 31st July 2012, 100 Club, London

This is the recording I made at the 100 Club of the Anti Nowhere League's set.
They were great fun, plenty of energy plus a set full of crowd pleasers, I certainly wasnt disappointed. By this time I was absolutely slaughtered & I was up & down like I wanted an Olympic Gold in the pogo (this unfortunately is reflected in the quality of the recording).
Again its unedited, lossless & straight from the master- it IS listenable, I might even go as far as to say enjoyable, but that might be just because of the memories it brings to me of a great night out

I hope someone out there likes it as well, download it, play it & bin it if you think it's crap- or share it if you don't

Tracks:
01 We Are.... The League
02 We Will Survive
03 I Hate People
04 Break The Law
05 This Is War
06 My God's Bigger
07 So What
08 Woman (at the end of this you can hear me say that that 'was dedicated to the ex wife',)
09 Streets Of London
10 For You
11 Pig Iron

Lossless (PCM) from the Master

Discharge - Converse Represents - 31st July 2012, 100 Club, London

Here's the 4th Band from the 100 Club Punk night last month (I didnt record the 3rd band - Goldblade)
Again, not the greatest recording, so I'm just giving it to you as it comes- untouched & lossless
I'm not a great Discharge fan & I got the tunes from the set list which I nicked from the stage at the end of their set. Even though I'm not a fan they were great, they did a good set (had a few mic probs during a couple of songs - one technical & 1 due to a fan nicking it)
I dont think the set list is correct as I'm sure they had to cut it short due to timing issues
Tracks:

01 Hear Nothing
02 Nightmare Continues
03 Look At Tomorrow
04 The End
05 No Feeble Bastard
06 Hell On Earth
07 Cries Of Help
08 Protest & Survive
09 Hype Overload
10 War Is Hell
11 Never Again
12 Fight Back
13 Realities Of War
14 State Violence
15 Possibilities Of Life's Destruction
16 Blood Runs Red
17 Decontrol

as I said this is taken from the set list, but I'm pretty sure they didnt do them all

Converse Represents - 31st July 2012 - live at the Legendary 100 Club

the 100 Club is more than just the venue for this summer’s Represent shows, it is one of the most important clubs in British musical history. For over seventy years the venue has been at the forefront of musical movements from swing and jazz through to punk, indie, reggae and Northern soul. This year the tickets were not on sale but available by signing up on the official site & names being drawn out of the hat as such - I was lucky enough to be one of those names- I only put in for the Punk night & that's what  I got-  happy days
I must admit I had every intention of going there to test my recording equipment & learn what different settings do so that I could, in the future, deliver enjoyable recordings to pass on - especially with 2 PIL gigs coming up this week
well that was the intention ....... I fucked up, BIG TIME- sorry guys

the reality was that me & my mates met up in London 4 hours before the doors opened & we got pissed- I mean proper blurry eyed, wobbly legs pissed- this was well before we had even set foot through the 100 Club's doors

Once inside the100 Club, I claimed my free limited edition T shirt (given out to the first 100 punters) & hit the bar - no surprises there then and I must admit I'm chuffed with my T shirt.. very sad of me I know

But things got worse, all my plans & good intentions went right out of the window.  I went to the front of the stage, almost on top of the monitors, got crushed in crowds, jumped up & down like a teenager & fell over a few times- all of this with my little recorder doing its job, sitting in my shirt pocket. I did at least remember to press record when the bands came on - I even managed to record 5 of the 6 bands (I really have no idea what I did to lose Goldblade's recording)

Unfortunately this means the recordings are pretty poor- lots of annoying vibrations, the sound quality is up & down like a yoyo-

in truth I HAVE already learnt quite a bit from this so hopefully my PIL recordings will be better- I doubt they will be perfect
I have learnt the following when recording  (some of this might help any of you wanting to try your first experience in doing the same)
1. Dont stand in part of the crowd where you will get jostled/crushed/knocked over
2. down the front of a gig is great for having fun, crap for recording
3. you have to try & stand as still as reasonably possible if you are making a covert recording- this will help with reducing vibrations as well as dipping sound quality
4 stand a reasonable distance from the stage to benefit from the venues speakers
5 low mic sensitivity for loud venues
6 filters on for heavy bass
7 VERY IMPORTANT _ set recording levels manually NOT on auto- being that lazy will only piss you off the next day when you listen back to what you have

finally
8 ALCOHOL- leave it out if you are like me & cant just have 1 or 2 when I'm with my mates- it really does fuck up the best made plans & at the time you wont care....until the next day

All in all it was a great night, very enjoyable & lots of fun
Even though I'm quite ashamed/embarrassed by the quality of the recordings I made I'm still going to be sharing them with you

You never know you might like them???

They are all lossless, taken straight from the master, no artwork & not track separated (they're not worth the time or effort)

I'll be posting them over the next few days (but def not Wednesday or Thursday as I'll be seeing PIL)

Honestly guys if you download them please pop back & leave brutally honest feedback about what you've heard- we can all have a giggle about these ones

Sex Pistols - 6th July 1976, 100 Club, London

Funnily enough, this date in Sex Pistols history has produced 2 recordings which are absolutely awful quality, real shite & definately for completists only. They are the 2 worst recordings in my collection by far. I have nearly 200 recordings: 3 are awful only worth having to make up the collection, about a 20 or so are poor but listenable & 30 or so which are acceptable- that still leaves around 140 that are worth having even if you're not a mad, mad fan.
1st up is a 100 Club audience recording, the earliest I have. The file contains the complete gig which is absolute awful quality, you can hardly hear it. Sounds like it was recorded a mile away from the gig & under water- but also in the file are the last 5 songs from the same gig but extremely good quality, so someone has better out there & is just not sharing. Here's the set list:

01. I Wanna Be Me/No Lip
02. Seventeen (I'm A Lazy Sod)
03. Steppin' Stone
04. New York (Pills)
05. Watcha Gonna Do About It?
06. Submission
07. Satellite
08. No Fun
09. Substitute
10. Pretty Vacant
11. Problems
12. No Fun (cut)

from separate source:
1. No Fun
2. Substitute
3. Pretty Vacant
4. Problems
5. Did You No Wrong
