Punk77 - Joy Division Rehearsals - October/November 1977

Are Joy Division Punk???? Dont Care - it's my blog and I'll share if I want to.

A couple of years ago a chap (who wishes to remain anonymous) got in touch with me to say Thank You for all the things that I had shared. He has been following my blog since the very early days and has grabbed many things for his collection. He said that unfortunately he didnt have any PIL recordings that I needed but as a Thank You he sent me his complete collection of Ioy Division bootlegs.

While I did love the studio stuff of Joy Division, I in no way considered myself a massive fan or a knowledgeable one either.

Anyway once I received the Joy Division recordings I decided to do a bit of research. It turns out that the very kind gentleman appears to have sent me copies of every known JD live recording ever. Plus he also sent me various sources, so for some gigs I have audience and soundboard recordings.

Sadly I have no info about the source or lineage of any of them but I do enjoy them immensely. So today I am sharing with you some rehearsals that came as part of the package. I hope you can enjoy them to,

A massive Thank You to the original source of this (whoever you may be) and a massive Thank You to my anonymous donor. Your gift was not necessary as I do this for the love of it, but your gift is greatly appreciated.

    4 Be 2's - Lyceum, London - 19th November 1980

4" Be 2" were formed by John's brother Jimmy Lydon, along with Jock McDonald, together with a whole host of Lydon family & friends.
The band's name was taken from an old Irish joke about a plank of wood, and not rhyming slang.

The 4" Be 2" claimed John Lydon produced most of their stuff. As far as we know John Lydon's only involvement with them, apart from socialising, was to possibly produce their first two singles. Though he later denied working with them at all, claiming it was all a McDonald cash in.

Probably the most famous John Lydon / 4" Be 2" 'collaboration' is the infamous trip to Dublin in 1980, where he ended up in Mountjoy Prison after being beaten up by a barman.

By autumn 1981, the 4" Be 2" broke-up and Jimmy retired into marriage.

This is a rare gem as I wasn't previously aware of any live recordings out there. Last year I was sent a cassette by Pete O, who follows me on twitter. So we owe him a massive Thank You as this may have disappeared forever .
